We recently asked one of our designers, Jenny Boije from Lipfish about her brand and how she got involved in children’s wear.

Tell us a little bit about you and where you originated from?
I am 35 years old, married and have two children (5 and 3 yrs old). I come from a city called Norrkoping which is 160kms south of Stockholm. In 1998 i moved to Stockholm. My studies have mainly been in the communication area with some focus on writing and web design.
What made you decide to design children’s playwear?
I though it could be a good idea to make clothes that children could interact with before they started walking. A toy that is always easy to reach. So the idea of the main target group was children between 0 to 1 years old. Quite quickly I realised that this target group was not the one i sold most too though. Children between 2 and 3 yrs is the biggest selling group.
How did you come up with the name Lipfish?
I drew the fish about 10 years ago and when i created the company i wanted the fish in my logo. So i had to come up with a name that worked together with the fish. Since the fish has big lips LipFish seemed like a good idea. There is actually a real fish with that name.
We love the LipFish range, what inspires your designs and the interactive characters?
I have always loved simple expressful and colourful characters. My dream was to become and illustrator but since i am not very talented in that area (besides the style i use for the clothes) it was not an option. But I have always had a big interest for illustrators, i am really impressed of what some of them make.
In the beginning i just drew fun characters from my head. Now it is a big different, since i have to come up with new themes for every season. So when i do research i study photos of the animal i have in mind and then turn them in to simplified drawings. If i want to find inspiration the best place to look is children’s books. Lots of colours and fun figures. Children’s drawings are also perfect for inspiration. They don’t have any limits of what is possible and they have such an imagination. I have started collecting drawings from my 5 year old son as ideas for the future. I think i have effected him in some way too, because his figures have the same type of eyes as i use in my drawings.
Can you give us a snap shot of what the next season may consist of?
Dinosaurs - a subject that always is up to date for children. T-Rex is of course included, but in true LipFish style he is friendly and not scary at all.
Do you offer LipFish in any other countries?
LipFish can be found in about 20 countries.
Do you have a favourite product in the LipFish range?
My favourites are the sausage dog and the frog. I am so happy that i finally have found a factory that could make the frog into a soft toy. The front and the monkey is on a boat at the moment and will reach Sweden by the end of March. The frog is called Janne. I have had toy samples lying around home and my kids started to call him Janne, so it felt natural to give him that name.
Do you get to travel a lot with your business?
I should travel more than i do, but since i have small kids i don;t want ot be away that much.I try to visit at least some of the fairs we participate in every season and then i visit the producers. I go to Turkey twice a year and last month i visited the producer in India. Best trip so far was the one to Tokyo, i will absolutely return to Japan. I think traveling is an important part of this business so i will probably start traveling more in the future.
